I've had a love-hate relationship with coffee since I started drinking it in college. I got mono my sophomore year, and when I came back three weeks before finals, I didn't know how I was going to push through to get everything done. Enter: coffee.

I didn’t even like the taste, so I ate chocolate-covered espresso beans, I drank flavored lattes, and I added extra shots. The taste started to grow on me, the smell of freshly ground beans started to make me drool, and caffeine propelled me right through finals and into my junior year seemingly unscathed.

Coffee saved my sophomore year, and I've been drinking it on and off ever since. (I tried to replace it with tea a few years ago, but it just wasn't the same. I need the beans.) But one thing has also always followed me: that ever-present, seemingly unavoidable dark side of coffee. You know what I'm talking about: the jitters, the explosion of energy followed by feeling like honey dripping from a wall a few hours later. The anxiously pumping heart, the tense shoulders hunched up around your ears like a turtleneck. I've always taken this dark side as a necessary cost, as something I could live with, to get all those delicious energy balls of ambition that coffee brings first. And when I first started using CBD, I didn't think anything would change. CBD's main effect is anti-inflammation, right?

But boy was I pleasantly surprised. I now use CBD oil under my tongue every morning not only for my tense muscles, my tooth and jaw pain, and anxiety, but also to regulate my energy and smooth out my morning coffee.

That sounds so silly, to take CBD to counter the effects of too much coffee, but CBD has entirely changed my relationship to coffee, and to productivity. CBD disintegrates those coffee jitters, balances the surge and crash into a mellow wave of energy, and keeps my heart from pounding its way out of my chest with my morning cup.

Cannabis is an amazing plant, and CBD has so many effects and applications within our bodies. It works with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) in ways we don't even understand yet, but we can feel. CBD has touched so many parts of my life and made so many little nuggets that much better. What's your nugget?
